# Square units

A square unit is equal to the area of a square with each side measuring 1 unit.

In the U.S. customary system of measurement, commonly used square units include square inches (in^{2}), square feet (ft^{2}), square yards (yd^{2}), and square miles (mi^{2}).

In the metric system of measurement, commonly used square units include square centimeters (cm^{2}), square meters (m^{2}), and square kilometers (km^{2}).

Although a square unit of area may be in the shape of a square, it can take other shapes.
