Hectare
A hectare (ha) is a measurement of area. It is a metric unit of measurement, but not an SI (International System of Units) unit, though it is accepted for use in SI. It is commonly used as a measurement of large areas of land.
1 hectare = 10000 square meters
As can be seen in the figure above, 1 hectare is equal to a 100 x 100 meter square area.
Converting hectares
Hectares are generally used for larger areas. Use the following converter to convert hectares between other commonly used measurements of area.
How big is a hectare?
A hectare is a large area that can be difficult to conceptualize. For reference, a typical American football field is a bit less than half a hectare:
91.44 m × 48.8 m = 4462.272 m2
Football (soccer) fields vary in size, ranging in length from 100-110 m, and 64-75 m in width for fields on which international matches are played (the rules are more strict for international matches). Using the average of the ranges:
m2
This should provide at least some concept of how large a hectare is. Most fields used in sporting events are close in size to a hectare, but are still not quite as large.
